Bill Pador > "Liquid Gold"
I've been wanting to play around with water for some time now and I finally got around to trying it out today for the first time. I have a lot of stuff to learn about this but I figured I'd try some techniques I use for other things to see if they work. Some of them did, some of them didn't, so it was a good learning experience anyway.

Lighting was provided by a 500 watt work light set in front of the camera to back light the water drop and between the WB I used and the Kelvin temp of the bulb I managed to make plain old water in a plain glass dish look like liquid gold and it has a metallic appearance which I was very satisfied with in the end. Let me know what you think !

The reflection in the drop is that of the work light I used in perfect shape, pretty cool ! I used a 1" deep glass dish to hold the water and a ear cleaning bulb to hold & drop the water from above. Camera was set up on a tripod at dish level and I used a cable release to pull the trigger. Lens was my Tamron Di 90mm Macro f/2.8 set to limited zoom and was about 8" away from the dish. Post consisted of sharpening, crop and frame addition.

Bill Pador > "Commemorative Rope"
The story behind this image actually means a lot to me. To the simple viewer it's a piece of rope wrapped around a piling which is part of my Tiki bar as part of the pier I built around the bar. I liked the shadow & natural light that was being cast on it early yesterday morning, thus taking the shot. But after looking at it I remembered how important this slice of rope was to me.

It's actually a slice of my life with great meaning behind it. This rope was used to fly the Main U.S.A. Flag over the United States Military Academy 'WEST POINT' where I was stationed as a military police officer from '85-'88. It flew the flag for exactly 1 year over 'Trophy Point' over looking the Hudson River which West point guarded during the civil war before it's replaced with a new rope & flag. On the 365th day the U.S. flag was flown on it for the last time, but at the end of the day a special ceremony took place, in MY HONOR!. The West Point honor guard performed the ceremony by firing a 21 gun salute and then a canon volley, the flag was lowered while being saluted by some very important people, then folded according to military guidelines with the fired shells from the 21 gun salute being tucked inside the flag. Then the rope was cut from the pole and saluted. Both were then presented to me for my years of service to the military as a departing gift before I retired.

I have the flag encased in a shadow box in my home and had that rope laying around for many years before making it part of my bar and had forgotten all about the honor that went into that silly piece of rope until I shot this image which brought back a lot of memories. Well I hope you all enjoyed knowing the history behind this image and that piece of rope, kind of gives a little more then just an image today.

Bill Pador > "Sun-Rays Shine Down"
Evening Folks, I caught these sun rays shining down out of the sky yesterday while picking my daughter up from school. I applied a few bi-colored filters to it and turned it into a oil painting. I liked the colors and lines in it so I decided to post it as a good luck piece for everyone this weekend.

I'm packing my gear up for a trip to NY City in a few hours to photograph & document the raising of the "MIRACLE ON THE HUDSON" jet airliner that went down yesterday for the local news paper. I don't have any press credentials for this from the paper since I'm going as a freelance but I'm hoping my retired police ID will get me close to the action after talking to a few fellow officers ;) Hopefully I'll be able to get some good captures to bring back and create a gallery to share with all of you, so keep your fingers crossed. Oh and yes I have plenty of HOT TOES & HAND heating pads to keep warm, plus my heavy leather jacket, scarf, gloves & hat will be part of my wardrobe LOL. I might even take a few SP's so you can see me freezing LOL.

I was hoping to shoot it from Weehawken NJ pier where the Ferries that rescued everyone dock but the plane floated 3 miles down river now and will have to enter the city to get close enough, even with the 800mm lens I have it just won't cut it. Amazing how the pilot was able to land on water and keep everyone alive, a miracle in my book that's for sure. They announced that they will be raising her out of the sea at 10am so I'll be off at 4:30am to avoid any morning rush hour traffic (which starts about 5:30am) and try to get a good piece of real estate to set my gear up on in order to record a little history, I'm only 35 min. from the city. Since a water landing with no death or even injuries has never occurred I would say it's an important event.

I'll be posting the images (if I get some) as soon as I return later this afternoon, hopefully in VICTORY !

UPDATE **** I'M BACK, It's a LONG "But VERY Interesting" Story which I'll write tomorrow, Good thing is I DID get SOME images that should be pretty cool of the plane crash AND some Awesome Surise hour shots of the city scape & surrounding area! Bad thing is I couldn't wait any longer for them to pull it out, I was there 12 hours and they still didn't START! They're having problems lifting the ICE flooded 1,000,000 lb. plane out. It was 'OMG' COLD and my spine couldn't take any more. I'll be working on the gallery Images RIGHT NOW and will post when it's done in a few hours, I have (3) 8 Gig & (3) 4 Gig cars to go thru, TTYS!

PS: Thanks for all your WONDERFUL comments on my rope image yesterday !

Bill Pador > Challenge Code for 12/1/08 PLANE or PLAIN

The Plane (or Plain) Challenge...12/01/08
The Challenge: Create a photo with your interpretation of the word "Plane" (or "Plain").
The Participants: Kre8ive, John (300m), Karina Boese, The Curious Camel, Creative Deviance, Johnloguk, Lady Kate, and myself.
The Result: PLAIN According to Roget's Thesaurus says "Florid, Rich, Flowery & Elegant so here I display an Elegant, Rich Flowery Japanese fan turned into an Elegant piece of Artistic Art-Deco Modern Art. Many levels of post production have gone into this and I really enjoyed building this piece of art. A full shot of the fan was taken and then a copy made, flipped and attached to the original mounted sideways. The color contrast was adjusted and then sharpened. Then a whole bunch of levels were created to come up with this rendition to include a ghost frame. To see the full detail be sure to view it in X-Large Format. It came out so cool looking to me that I'm going to get this printed in large format and frame it on my wall. This was a very fun challenge for my & I had a ball with this one. Thanks for looking and I hope you all enjoy your day! ~Bill~
Bill Pador > Happy Hump Day Everyone, Sorry I've been MIA for a few days, i just haven't been feeling well and needed a few days rest but I'm up & around again for the exception of still being really tired so I fired up a hot cup of coffee so I can sit down, relax and visit some of your dailies so I can catch up on my back log. The weather here has been, well simply put Awful! Raining for the lat 4 days with 2-3 more days like it still on tap, chilly, damp and dark. So looks like the next few days dailies will be still life projects, that's once I figure out what I want to shoot LOL

I hope you all have been having a good week, personally I'm looking forward to some better weather so I can get myself over to the Bronx and visit the Zoo for some Gorilla shots. I've been excited to visit the Bronx Zoo since last fall when I went. Hopefully I'll get some better conditions this time around with more sun & better lighting for the colorful bird shots. The Gorilla exhibit is what I'm looking forward to most though, they were one of the most incredible & fascinating animals to watch & photograph I've experienced in my entire career. I could sit & watch them for hours.

I took this shot from my front porch, the image really doesn't even do the sky justice as it looked in person was even more vivid & moody.

Enjoy your day folks, it's great to be back from my 4 day Missing In Action Tour, even my Mom was worried about my lack of posts LOL - So this is for you Mom ;)

Bill Pador > "Soap Bubble Fun"
Thanks for all the wonderful comments on yesterdays FEATHER image, I really liked the way it turned out with the soft edge smokey framing I managed to create with the earth tone brownish / gold (one of my favorite image colors that goes GREAT with sky blue). It was a really fun image to capture & create and I'm glad you all liked it so much, that made me very happy to say the least !

This abstract is from a bottle of 'Dawn' dish soap. I ran out of dish soap in the kitchen and remembered that i had this full bottle of Dawn in the garage that i use to wash off any road grime I pick up on my car during the summer months.
Anyway this bottle of soap was almost FROZEN because of the cold temps here and it carried some wild SNOW flake like shapes suspended in the liquid (look under the bubbles) I guess it's a chemical reaction to the cold but it was really cool and had to be photographed. You can see the the other (3) soap abstracts in my EXTRAS Gallery HERE if your interested

"COMING SOON" A lot of you have suggested that I should try teaching photography courses and I have been thinking about it a lot and have decided to try something. I'm going to TRY and create some short VIDEO'S on how to do certain techniques that I'm fond of & posting them in a learning gallery and see how it works. I have a really good Sony HD Digital Video Camera I paid a lot of money for and should put it to use, so once I figure out how to edit my own videos I'll start making some HOW TO'S to share with all of you. Because of your encouragement I have also decided to offer some private IN HOME basic photography classes in my local area to try and pick up some extra money and share my knowledge to those who want to learn our passion. Thanks for all the ENCOURAGEMENT to teach you have given me, without it there is no way I would have ever thought of teaching, I think it should be a lot of fun for me too !

Have a great Sunday everyone, me I'm going to TRY to go hiking to relax and see if I can find anything interesting in the mountains to capture. Hopefully I'll come out with some good shots for the day.

Best Regards,
~Bill~
Bill Pador > "X-Ray Alien"
details best viewed @ X-Large
First I'd like to Thank You all for the wonderful response to yesterdays smoke art piece & step by step I did. I'm glad that so many of you enjoyed it & were interested in the instructions and possibly trying this technique out, it is after all a lot of fun and pretty simple to do once you do it once. I just wanted to clear up the concern about using 2 lights, you do NOT need to use 2 off camera lights for this, you can use a single with great results. I had done this with one flash until now without any problems & just added the 2nd to try something new, you just replace the second flash with a reflector piece opposite the flash unit pointing some light back into the set so you get the 3D effect of the light bouncing off the rear of the smoke and your golden. For Nikon users with the iTTL Creative wireless flash system you can also use 1 off camera flash and then utilize your pop up flash unit on the camera set at a low power instead of just using it as a master / trigger to fill in the front of the smoke as well. Any questions fire away and I'll assist you.

I did another piece tonight using 4 different smoke shots that I duplicated, flipped, layered & blended together, using the same techniques as yesterdays. This one turned out really cool creating several ALIEN faces & 1 whole alien figure in the middle looking like he's doing jumping jacks. Look behind & under him and you'll see several more alien faces staring straight at you. View this at X-Large to see all the details in this one guys, it's really cool IMO and what you see is ALL SMOKE as shot, nothing has been manipulated besides the colors and some minor dodging & burning to bring out some of the depth in certain areas. I only spent about 30 minutes from start to finish so as you can see it's not a huge project and can be done quite quickly.

"HERE'S THE BEGINING OF THIS PIECE"
If you'd like to see what the raw beginings of this image look like I placed the raw images as a small collage in my Extras gallery so you have an idea of how simple this starts off as and what a little work in CS3 can do to create an artistic piece.

Have a Great Hump Day (Wed.) folks your half way to the weekend !
~Bill~
Bill Pador > Well it's a nice cool Wed. here at 65' which is 30' lower then yesterday but our normal late April temps. More tulips have popped up in my garden so my flower dailies continue. I was able to get this one when the sun was lit on the top of the tulip highlighting the yellow parts nicely and then choose to go selective color with it to really bring the detail of that sunlit part out.

Hoping everyone has a great hump day

PS: This is Now Hangin in my Living Room as an 11" x 14" Matted Print I liked it so much ;)

Bill Pador > "Natures Crossing"
~ please view at X2Large for best detail ~
I shot this last week the same day I took the Little Red Bridge shot & my Christmas card shot. It's on the opposite side of the street on the same little river. Shot from street level looking down I decided to go with a portrait length because it just looked so wonderful in the view finder with the little bits of snow coming out to the rivers edge and the light was just perfectly coming down on that fallen tree to highlight it along with the deep reflections towards the back of the river turn.

"This is one of my Favorite B&W shots of This Year" and just had to post it before the gallery is closed for the year. I did some selective dodging & burning on the river bank snow and the water to bring the highlights out but the light patterns you see are all mother nature. It was like she was showing off the snow in the dark river water. I also softened the focus a bit to add a peaceful feel.

* I have Increased the size availability in this gallery so you can view this larger because you just have to see the details in the reflections and how the light is hitting the snow areas in this one, so PLEASE view this at X2Large to see full detail & effect of the light & shadows of this one, this is one shot I really am PROUD of and glad I could fit it in my '08 gallery for you to see!

PS: Thanks for all the wonderful comments on my 'Insense Rose' yesterday they really brought a smile to my face. Oh you might wanna see that one at X2Large as well, you can actually see the texture I laid into now at that size !!
